Nothing was more glamorous from 1986 than Maria! With love — your people

Maria

Studio 54 locked its doors for the last time in 1986 — the same year Maria arrived, and the glamour has had somewhere to live ever since. She has carried it for forty years. One night at MarIA79, seven until two: dinner, dancing, and the kind of photographs you keep or in some cases hide to replace yours from 1986!

Coming in from out of town

Where to stay.

The venue sits in MiMo — the stretch of Biscayne Boulevard where Miami kept its 1950s motel architecture instead of knocking it down. It is the right neighbourhood for this party, and you can stay in the middle of it.

The one we'd book

The Vagabond Hotel Miami

7301 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33138
About a mile and a half from the venue — five minutes by car.

A restored 1953 MiMo motor lodge with the original neon back up, a courtyard pool and a bar worth arriving early for. It is the closest thing in Miami to sleeping inside the theme.

Guest code MARIA40

Give the code when you book. If the booking page has nowhere to put it, call the hotel and mention it then — and tell JC, so he can chase it.

If it's full

Elsewhere on Biscayne

MiMo Biscayne Boulevard Historic District
NE 50th to NE 77th Street

The same stretch has several small hotels and a run of short-let apartments, all within a few minutes of the door. Anything between 50th and 79th puts you close enough to walk home from the afterparty, or at least to tell yourself you could.

South Beach is a twenty-minute drive and a different evening entirely — fine if you want the beach, further than you'll want to be at two in the morning.

Dress code

Eighties glam. Not a costume.

Think the 1980s at Studio 54 rather than a themed party — the room should look expensive, not ironic. Dress like you are being photographed, because you will be.

Yes

  • Sequins, satin, lamé, liquid metallics
  • Black tie with the collar open
  • A strong shoulder and a sharp silhouette
  • Gold, bronze, oxblood, hot pink, midnight
  • Velvet dinner jackets
  • Serious jewelry and a bolder lip
  • Heels you can still dance in at one in the morning

Not this

  • Rented costumes and wigs
  • Neon leg warmers and headbands
  • Anything with a slogan on it
  • Denim, sneakers, flip-flops
  • Shorts or beachwear
  • Dressing as a named celebrity

If you're deciding between two outfits, wear the one that catches the light.

Répondez

Tell us you're coming.

Please reply by Saturday, November 28 so we can give the venue a final count. While you're here, leave a favorite memory of Maria — the good ones go up on this page before the party.

Only used for day-of updates.

Including you.

Will you be there?

Names go on the door list, so spell them the way they'd be announced.

Tell us for everyone in your party — this goes straight to the kitchen.

These are going up on the big screen at the party. Everything you send in plays as a slideshow all night, so the more you add the better the show — and the more Maria gets to relive. Add as many as you like, each with its own photo. One line and a terrible old picture is perfect; nobody is marking these.
